Happy Halloween!

Day 39:  Happy Halloween!  We had a great Hallow-Weenie Roast tonight.  It was a bit chillier than I would have liked, but we had plenty of people here, lots of hot dogs, the fire pit going, and some great costumes.  Only bad thing--we ran through ALL of our candy!  Thank goodness our friends had some backup treats.

I really would like to encourage people to foster community, meet the people around you, and establish those relationships.  I'd say more, but I am wiped out (thus the 5 minute, kind-of-a-cop-out doodle tonight), plus I have a whole write-up on why I think Halloween is a great holiday.  Happy Halloween, and don't overdo the treats!

Please, God, bless!

Day 38:  After a pretty busy week of work and travel, I am so glad to be home!  There is nothing like coming home, and getting into your own bed!

Bison Sliders

Day 37: I had another first for me today.  I had bison sliders for dinner.  Tasted like hamburger, only leaner.  It was good, and the company wasn't bad either!  In any case, here is my 15 minute sketch of my slider- pre-grill, of course!

Which Hasbro Toy?

Day 36:  Went to a late dinner with some co-worker friends.  I always enjoy the opportunity to learn something new about everyone.  So one of my co-workers told me he worked for Hasbro as a youth making toys.   Can you guess which one?

Is This Your Seat?

Day 35:  I had an early flight today.  Rather than stand with the herd waiting to be corralled, I thought I would be smart and wait until most people boarded.

Everything was going as I had hoped until I saw my aisle seat with a gal and her baby sitting in it.  "Is this your seat?" Yes.  "Would you mind switching with me?  My husband and I booked our tickets together, and they sat us apart.". Where is your seat?  "Over there (points to middle seat across the aisle."

Sigh.....I looked over and saw two very large men with what seemed to be a space between them.  My first inclination was to say NO.  I HATE the middle seat.  But, if it was me with my baby, I would hope someone would switch with me.

In the end it was okay.  Yeah, I was squished....but both guys were really nice, and funny.  So, I suppose I did my good deed for the Day.

Shy Guy

Day 34:  This is Shy Guy.  Apparently he is a troublemaker in the Mario video games.  He always wears a mask--for a villain-type, he's kind of cute.

My kid wants to be Shy Guy for Halloween, so I spent some time this afternoon making the mask.

I learn so much from my son.  I thought Shy Guy, was-well-a shy guy?!? ;)

Roller Babes!

Day 33:  I did something brand spankin' new today! I went to a roller derby! I connected with some old pals the other day, and they invited me to their team's bout.  Roller Derby combines 3 of the things I really enjoy--a great group of gals (and guys), skating, and some bang up-no kidding-stress relief!

It took me and the hubby a while to figure out what was going on, but once we did we were totally diggin' it. The thing I loved the most is that even after a good bruising, the girls would be all smiles and hugs, congratulating each other on the great hit. I also loved the confidence the girls had. Women of all shapes and sizes, proud of who they were. Very, very cool!  Roll on!

A Toast to a Retired Colonel

Day 32:  It was a very busy day today.  I was honored to be able to attend the retirement of a good friend today from the Air Force after 35 yrs of service.  He is now officially a retired Colonel.

I was not surprised to see the room packed--more full than I have seen in any of the other retirement ceremonies I have attended. What struck me the most is that a good number of the people he invited had been mentors to him at one point or another in his career. Some may look at this distinguished visitor list and be in awe of the brass. What I saw was a host of people who put their time into a man, helping him to become a great leader, role model, and friend.

A quick doodle-toast to my friend Dave!  May your next chapter be a blessing!

Fountain of Life

Day 31: I can't believe I made it to one month of a doodle a day.  It's been challenging to me, but I have to admit I am enjoying it.  I went from not having spent time drawing anything in the last year or so, to spending anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour every day. I also really enjoy forcing myself to focus my perspective.

Today's doodle was REALLY fast...I'm pretty pooped, and after spending time with the family and taking care of stuff, I'm ready for bed.  This doodle is inspired by a verse in a prayer sent to my dear friend.  Her son is deploying, and this verse serves as a constant reminder of the true source of our lives.

Please, God, bless!

and in your light we will see light.

Natural Curls?

Day 30:  Since I am tired and plan on going to bed early, a 10 minute sheep seemed like a good doodle.  Sometimes things aren't what they seem.  Maybe the sheep has curly hair because she uses curlers?

I had a conversation with a coworker about a gentleman who was new to the organization, and immediately the folks that worked for him clamored to be his sage counsel.  Unfortunately, he is now realizing things are not what they seemed, and the so-called experts he was relying on are really opportunists without the skills they claimed to have.

No, things are not always what they seem to be.

Holy Superhero, Batman!

Day 29:  "I'm Batman!"   Okay, okay, really I'm not.

I was watching Teen Titans with my kid today, and they had a crazy episode where Robin had to "cave-sit" for Batman while he was away.  The rest of the superhero team is in AWE of Batman and proceeds to get into all of his cool Bat-gear.  When the bad guys show up, they take them out with the super-cool Bat-weaponry.  Afraid of what Batman would say about the mess when he got back, Robin promptly spray-painted the signature of the Joker.  It was pretty funny.

It got me to thinking....I have days where I would LOVE some Bat-gear....like some Bat-tape and Bat-rope.  Especially sitting in some of these routine, boring discussions at work, I can almost hear the soundtrack and see my Bat-self leap from the chair, plop my Bat-tape across the debating mouths, string up the briefer with my Bat-rope and feel good about being a Superhero, saving the masses from another bad meeting.  POW!

It's fun to daydream about having Super Powers. But the reality is I don't need them.  I have a Superhero who is always there to defend me, strengthen me, and save me.

Please, God, bless!

"Among the lamp stands there was someone like the Son of Man. He was wearing a long robe with a gold sash around his chest. His head and his hair were white like wool, in fact, as white as snow. His eyes were like flames of fire, his feet were like glowing bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of raging waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp, two-edged sword. His face was like the sun when it shines with full force." Rev 1:13:16

Lost

Day 28:  Today turned out to be an unusual day. This afternoon while I was still at work, the doorbell rang.  My husband went to answer it, and there stood a young man who was obviously drunk, high or something.  He was wobbling, slurring his words, and asked Danny if he could get a ride home....he just wanted to go home.  When he said no, the young man proceeded to stumble around, prance on our porch and our front yard, lay down in the grass, and eventually hopped into my mother's car!  By this time the police were there to assist this young man in his confusion.  For some reason, he was adamant that he was at a friend's house, and that my mother's car was his car.  He clearly was very, very lost.

I often note as I observe other people, be it on the news, in person, or from afar-how many are adamant that they know where they stand in this life?  Truth is not relative.  Our perspectives may be different, our perceptions may seem true for us, but in the end Truth is immutable.  No matter how hard we wish it, say it, or believe against it--it still is what it is.

So, how do we know who has the market on Truth?  Good question. In this age of soundbites we have every excuse to be completely led astray, and every opportunity to know better.  Seeking truth takes time, diligence, and research.  It takes an open mind, an honest assessment, the integrity to admit you were wrong, and a pure desire to understand.  Sometimes you may stumble upon it early on, but to be sure you must research it, study it, and confirm it.  Experiences and feelings are never good gauges, as they are so easily brought about.  Rationalizing things away to fit a model, desire, or ideal will certainly breed falsehoods.

I have always been one to have an insatiable curiosity and constant questions.  I certainly don't claim to have the market on the Truth.  It is because of this fact that I have taken on years of rigorous study, seeking, and learning, and continue to do so to confirm (or contradict if that is the case) what I have learned.  For a serious skeptic like myself, I had to have assurance in what my life's plumb line would be.

Today I have the greatest confidence that God-the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit-lives; I am more certain of this fact than I am of my own name because the evidence is there. I am sure many would debate me on this statement. I welcome a courteous, amicable conversation to discuss these things. I enjoy a civil discourse, and I appreciate the challenging questions-they make me dig deeper, question myself, and find more evidence for Truth, which in the end I hope makes me a better person. However, haters need not apply!  I have no desire to debate anyone, as I have found that counterproductive.  Truth is not a competition-it is a journey, a prize to be sought.  It won't be found based on who screams the loudest, has the most biting insults, exudes charisma, or has the best sales pitch.

The Truth is, proof of my God is statistically, scientifically, historically, prophetically, logically, mystically, and overwhelmingly reasonable and sound.  Most who believe otherwise likely have not done their homework or owned up to the obvious truths right in front of them. Many believe the sound bites. Others have built up animosity and hatred from years of hard life experience. Some of the greatest minds on earth have looked for every angle, or sought another road because it doesn't fit the model of their ideal.

In any case, Truth changes for no one.  Many are lost, and don't know it.

Please, God, bless!

Rollerblading with Dari

Day 27:  Another absolutely fabulous day, weather-wise.  I love sweatshirts, and I was just giggly that I got to wear one all day.  Later in the day  hubby and I went roller-blading with our dog, Dari.  She loves it!  She starts out pulling him, and later she's beside him.  Towards the end she's a tad behind.  On the last lap up the street our son decided to run alongside us.  When Dari saw Jace running ahead of her to the house she picked up her pace and high-tailed it to home.

The Apostle Paul talked about running to win the prize.  What is the prize?  Our HOME in heaven. When we focus on our HOME, we will get that extra push we need to get us through that last lap and to the prize where we have the ultimate sense of security and joy.

Please, God, bless!

"You know that in a race all the runners run but only one wins the prize, don’t you? You must run in such a way that you may be victorious. 25 Everyone who enters an athletic contest practices self-control in everything. Raining Leaves

Day 26:  Well, today will be a two-for, since I didn't get my doodle for yesterday posted.  We went out with friends for dinner and had a great time, but we got home late, so we went to bed.  I'm posting yesterday's sketch this am, and I'll be back on track tonight with another.

We all spent most of the day outside yesterday.  The kid was playing with friends, hubby was getting things done around the house, and I scrubbed the front porch.  It was so breezy, the leaves were falling like rain at times.  It reminded me that winter is coming very soon, and the growing season is over.

Please, God, bless!

Charitable Golf

Day 25:  It was an absolutely BEAUTIFUL fall day!  I was blessed to help my friend Trish with a charity golf tournament for the Wounded Warrior Project.  The mountains were a lovely backdrop to the colorful fall trees and pristine grounds.  Truly it was a breathtaking sight!

I have only golfed twice in my life--once in sweltering heat in CA where I near passed out from dehydration, and the last time in VA when I borrowed a friend's clubs and broke one in half on my first swing!  Needless to say I did NOT golf today.  But, I was able to help with registration and then drove around for 4 hours in a golf cart, stopping to take lots of pictures.

I'm a regular supporter of Wounded Warriors, and it was so awesome to see so many people donate extra funds for such a worthy cause-helping provide for those who have put their life on the line for our country, our people, and our freedom.  It's tragic that there are so many in this country that really don't seem to appreciate the sacrifice!

There are many who do not appreciate God's sacrifice-He gave His Son to die to save you and I.  There is no greater gift, and yet so many reject it.

Telling people "Thank you!"  is certainly a wonderful thing.  However, our verbal appreciation is not likely to provide help or healing for tangible needs.  Truly, our actions witness our gratitude to the one/One who gave so much.  And, maybe those who have been less than grateful recipients will come to understand the importance of such a sacrifice.

Please, God, bless!

"What good does it do, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith but does not prove it with actions? This kind of faith cannot save him, can it? 15 Suppose a brother or sister does not have any clothes or daily food 16 and one of you tells them, “Go in peace! Stay warm and eat heartily.” If you do not provide for their bodily needs, what good does it do? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it does not prove itself with actions, is dead."  Jas 2:14-17 ISV

Time for a Haircut

Day 24:  It happens to me every time.  One week I think my hair is just how I want it, only to realize the following week its driving me crazy and NEEDS to be cut.  Fortunately for me, my "hair magician", Danielle, had an opening tonight.  Nothing like good cut to make you feel like a new person...even if no one else notices the difference!

I can't imagine what it would be like to never cut your hair.  Imagine the split ends!    That was something that always intrigued me about Samson.  Think about it-up until Delilah, the boy never had a haircut!  There was good reason of course, and we can dissect the symbolic nature of the story another time.  Suffice it to say that his God-given strength was possible only when physically evidenced by the outward dedication to God-his long locks.  Once his hair was cut, his strength was gone.

As a child of the 80's, I know big hair.  Yet, big hair, long hair, curly hair, straight hair-I don't ever recall my hair making me inwardly or outwardly stronger-except maybe in my neck muscles to tote the giant helmet of hair.  Thankfully, I know where my strength comes from; it has nothing to do with hair, and everything to do with God.

Please, God, bless!

"The LORD is my strength and song,
and he has become my salvation.
This is my God and I’ll praise him,
the God of my father and I’ll exalt him."  Ex 15:2

The Art of the Question

Day 23:  Its getting late, so my doodle was a fast one.  I read something today that talked about the art of the question.  Questions can be very powerful tools for problem solving and persuasion. They can be requests for knowledge, or rhetorical to make a point. But insightful, powerful questions make you stop and think.

The Apostle Paul was a formidable debater. He must have shredded his opponents, leaving them shattered and seeking cover.   Paul routinely used questions in his writings.  His questions are intended to make the reader think, to focus, and to act.

What question stops you in your tracks?

Please, God, bless!

Larger Than Life

Day 22:  I wasn't feeling so hot today so I stayed home.  Wanting to be productive I decided to start Christmas shopping.  Each year I have a theme for all of the presents we buy extended family and friends-can you guess by this picture what my theme is this year? (wink!)

I admit, I am a huge Disney fan.  Its hard to go to Disneyworld, or sail the cruise and not buy into Mickey-Mania.  Mickey Mouse is almost a character that is larger than life.  A mouse with a theme park, merchandise, movies, tv shows, clothing, home decor-you name it! You say MICKEY, I say MOUSE!

God is larger than life-after all, He created it.  When I need a reminder of how incomprehensibly HUGE God is, that He is ALWAYS in control, I go to the end of Job.  Job and his "friends" have engaged in a lengthy discourse regarding the cause of his misfortune.  His pals are replete with accusations, and Job equally adamant with his defense.  Then God speaks, and sets them straight on just how ignorant they are about Him.

Mickey may be an icon, but he is NO comparison to God!

Please, God, bless!

"Where were you when I created the earth?
Tell me, since you know so much!
Who decided on its size? Certainly you’ll know that!
Who came up with the blueprints and measurements?

                 How was its foundation poured,
                 and who set the cornerstone,
While the morning stars sang in chorus
and all the angels shouted praise?

And who took charge of the ocean
when it gushed forth like a baby from the womb?
That was me! I wrapped it in soft clouds,
and tucked it in safely at night.

Then I made a playpen for it,
a strong playpen so it couldn’t run loose,
And said, ‘Stay here, this is your place.
Your wild tantrums are confined to this place.’"

Birds on a Wire

Day 21: It was a light day at the office due to the holiday.  I decided to leave early given there were only a handful of us there today in hopes I would get some things done.  But I ended up spending the next hour and a half taking care of something that should have progressed much quicker. On the way home, annoyed at my time having been wasted,  I noticed all of the birds just sitting on the wires across the road.  I wondered what they thought of the traffic that so often creeps beneath them?  Why do they sit there?  Is it a place of rest?  A stopping point in a journey?  Aren't they bored?  What about all of the things they need to do to survive?

I know patience is something I am sorely lacking.  For whatever reason, seeing these birds just sitting there gave me pause from fussing at the car going too slow in front of me.

I thought of the birds on the ark with nowhere on earth to feed, gather, and rest.  I thought of their caretaker, Noah, a man of great patience.  He spent 100 years building an ark,and then spent about a year cooped up in it, taking care of "things".  I'm sure he would have preferred to be doing something else. When the waters started to recede he sent out a bird 4 different times hoping for some sign of dry land and a place for them to rest from flying. Eventually, Noah and the birds were able to leave the ark and focus on their priority tasks.

I suppose its all part of God's plan, that we never seem to accomplish all the things we think we need to.  Maybe those inconvenient pauses-the waiting in line, cleaning up an accidental mess, appointments and the like-are meant to teach us something.  Maybe the waiting for little things is preparation for bigger things. Maybe its just to teach us to take a breath, and Trust.

Please, God, bless!

"He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again, but it did not return to him anymore." Gen 8:12

p.s.  Some have asked about the time I spend on these doodles. The answer is, not much.  That's why I took on this challenge. To force myself to do one of the things I really enjoy even when it didn't hit my day-to-day priorities.  So, I allot 15-30 minutes to doodle.  I also limit my doodles to a small sketch book--which actually makes it challenging sometimes, but it also takes less time with less real estate.

What Do You Have?

Do you have a little time, love, money or faith?  Will you give it all to Him?
Day 20:  This morning I was captivated by the daily devotion sent out by Anne Graham Lotz. She talked about what is humanly possible, and then what is possible with God.  Phillip's initial response when Jesus asked him to feed the masses was one of incredulity.  By no human means could he do so.

Andrew noticed a young boy had fish and bread. Thankfully, the young boy offered all that he had, and in return witnessed a miraculous act.

Ms. Lotz asks her readers:

"What do you have? Do you have a little bit of time?
a little bit of love?
a little bit of money?
a little bit of faith?
Don't concentrate on what you lack, concentrate on what you have.
Then give all of it to Jesus for His use."

I shamefully confess as I realize I am stingy with all 4 (time, love, money, faith) at times.  Especially with time, since it seems I have so little.  This quick doodle-I hope- will remind me to take pause before I do things, pray before I act, and willingly give my ALL, ALWAYS.  With awestruck joy and admiration will I see my God act!

Just Dance!

Day 19:  As a kid I remember moving the furniture around and dancing in the living room.  As a teen, my friends and I all danced at school events, and as a young adult we danced until we closed down the clubs.

I've always loved to dance, so I love it when the kids pop on Just Dance and go crazy.  We had company tonight, and it was dance central!

I love that the Lord loves dancing. I'm not talking the kind of dancing we see so often today, that is oversexed and vexed.  But the kind of dancing that just comes from the heart, that fills you with joy, and makes you feel good (and if you're playing Just Dance--TIRED!)

We get so tied up with other things, we should make time to just dance!  If you're having a rough day, sometimes a quick dance to a good tune is all you need to perk you up. You know you will have a Divine Audience.

Please, God, bless!

'Coasters and Cake

Day 18:  My son had a teacher's workday today, so I took my boy to Kings Dominion to celebrate-just the two of us since his Dad was at work. It was a lot of fun since we both love thrill rides, and it was really nice to have that "mom" time. Now that he's getting older, those times seem to be less frequent.

So my doodle today was inspired by hanging with my boy on his birthday.  (Again, I will note that I'm not very good at doodling people, and even less so with colored pencils.  But, I figure I'll eventually figure it out. In the meantime, you can giggle over it.) I thank God for days like today, when I have the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful gift of my son.

Please, God, bless!

A Cabin in the Woods

Day 17:  Some days it's too easy to get bogged down.  I can feel the stress in my clenched jaw and tightened shoulders.  Tons of emails, a house to clean, things to put away, bills to pay.  The news is outrageous-always horrid, traffic is a nightmare...

Sometimes I close my eyes, and just pray for that sense of peace which so easily gets lost in a pile of mail, kids toys, or folded clothes.

Thankfully, God is always there, ready to pull me from the frenzy, and take me on a mental walk in a peaceful place.   The question is, will I drop what I'm doing and go with Him?

Please, God, bless!

The Serious Cow

The Serious Cow--for Laura
Day 16:  Probably my most ridiculous doodle to date.  My pal Laura and I were chatting at work. Something about how crazy things are.  As we talked about the ridiculous, she gestured towards my Chick-fil-a cow fan, and said, "You should draw a cow--and make him serious."  Giggle!

So, I did...I drew a serious cow.

Sometimes we need a bit of the ridiculous to focus our perspective. I suppose that is what the verse in Isaiah is supposed to do.  Normally bears will attack and eat a cow. Here God gives us another preview of his awesomeness.  Of course, I can only imagine how this went!

Bear:  "Cow, this is a lovely dinner party!"
Cow:  "Thank you!  Some more grass for you, Bear?"
Bear:  "Oh no, Cow, thank you.  I'm quite full.  Goodness, will you look at our crazy kids playing together!"
Cow:  "So sweet!  Besties!"

I pray you have a lighthearted moment in your day!

Please, God, bless!

Bridge the Gap

Day 15:  Today I witnessed an interesting discussion.  I was in a meeting where two different groups were trying to come to resolution on something.  Each side was correct in what they were saying, however, they didn't address the other's concerns.  In fact, it was almost like two disparate conversations that happened to be in the same room at the same time.

As the discourse continued, people began to get frustrated.  One person even suggested they get a mediator to help determine the correct course of action-someone to bridge the gap.

There are many times when I feel like I am so far from where God wants me to be-that the gap between me and Him is too great. Thank God I have a mediator to bridge that gap!

Please, God, bless!

S-L-O-W Down with Tea

Day 14:  Don't be surprised if you see several tea drawings over the year.  In fact, when I doodle I usually have a cup of tea.

Tea is one of my very favorite things-its warm, tasty, comforting...kind of like an internal hug!

One of the things I love about tea is that it makes you s-l-o-w down.  I'm not talking about tea in a thermos, but tea in a mug.  The kind that warms your hands, and because its hot you can't guzzle it.  Everything is so hurried these days.  Its wonderful to sit with a cup of tea, and just enjoy the moment.  Maybe reflect a little.  Be content!

Please, God, bless!

Our Girl

Day 13:  Today's doodle is in honor of my daughter, Analiese Danae.  She would have been 13 today, had she not been called Home.  Analiese died from bacterial meningitis at 14 months old.

I admit, I'm not very good at people drawings...kind of hard to take artistic liberties or they just look weird.  But, my heart was there.

After all of this time has past, I thought I would share from our experience:

  • Love your children, your spouse, and your family and never take them for granted.
  • Everyone goes Home when it is the right time.  We obviously won't like it, the circumstances may be unfair.  But our days are numbered and we go home right when we are called by the One who made us.
  • It does get easier over time.  Our daughter is never far from our thoughts, but we know where our Hope lies and we have every expectation of seeing her again.
  • You have a choice every day...you can stay in bed and wallow or you can get up and live the life God gave you--choose the latter!
  • Sometimes you will feel like you're doing ok, and than it will hit you when you least expect it; Hang in there--you'll make it.
  • Life really is short.  Do the things you enjoy with the ones you love.  Experience things, make some memories.  They are more precious than anything money can buy.
  • Pray, pray, pray, against anger.  It will only make you bitter and ruined.
Here is an excerpt of the letter Danny and I wrote for her memorial service.  I can say God has answered our prayers, and for those going through similar circumstances, I pray the same for you.

When we close our eyes, we don’t see what might have been.  We see that beautiful girl with big rosy cheeks…the brown hair with just twinge of red. We see her little outie belly button. We see the little ringlets in her hair.  We see those long eyelashes that made all the other ladies jealous, and those big blue eyes with just a little green.  We see our perfect little girl with 10 fingers and 10 toes, up in heaven driving the Lord Jesus crazy—pulling stars off their shelves, playing ball with little puffs of clouds, maybe even splashing the waves into the oceans as she did in the bathtub!

Thank you for your prayers, because he has heard them.  Each day gets a little bit easier as long as we lean on each other and we lean on Him.  Please continue to pray for us, as this holiday season will be difficult for us, and know that we are in God’s hands—all of us.

"This is what the LORD says: 'Restrain your voice from crying, and your eyes from tears, for there is a reward for your work,' declares the LORD. 'They’ll return from the enemy’s land. There is hope for your future,' declares the LORD. 'Your children will return to their own territory.' "  Jer 31:16-17

Too Much Stuff!

Day 12: So what does a Christmas tree, a pool pump, an avocado slicer and a party dress have in common?  They are all excess STUFF that I was getting rid of at the yard sale.

Yard sales are interesting.  There are those who show up early, forcing themselves in before the gates open.  There are others who think a 90% discount on something just isn't enough and try to barter from $3 to $2 for a $30 item never used.  But what is more ridiculous is how much I accumulated over the course of time!  Where did it come from?  I'm ALWAYS purging stuff, and its like it multiplies!

I suppose it really isn't that hard to figure out--impulse buys, well-meant gifts, thinking I NEED something when I don't. I was looking through a catalog I got in the mail today...glossy pictures tout things that will make your life easier, make you prettier, make you thinner, make you laugh, make your house look better, make you more comfortable and relaxed. Its easy to think you have to have it--for most things.   I have to ask...why would they sell a tote bag with a pair of cozy socks? How does that make sense?

The reality is, I don't really need all this stuff.  It is actually kind of embarrassing that after the yard sale I STILL had ~20 bags of stuff that we donated--and that doesn't include the ton of stuff we put in the free pile, and curb alert!  I obviously need to make a concerted effort to prevent the excess.

Please, God, bless!

"Whoever loves money will never have enough money. Whoever loves luxury will not be content with abundance. This also is pointless. When possessions increase, so does the number of consumers; therefore what good are they to their owners, except to look at them?"  Ec 5:10–11

Eat Those Words!

Day 11: Today my day was insane. The community yard sale is tomorrow and the only time we had all week to get ready was today. That meant not only getting all of the stuff out of the house, but we had to go into the attic to make sure we got everything.  As we were going through boxes, we came across a cardboard box in really bad shape labeled "Letters".  This box had all of the letters I had sent Danny the 10 months we were on different continents.  Awwwwww.....

One problem.  A mouse had decided to make a den out of our box of letters, and proceeded to nibble on some of them.  I guess he had his fill, because he was long gone.  It made me think of Ezekiel, when he was told to eat the scroll.  I suppose sometimes, words can be tasty.  Maybe Mr. Mouse is onto something...

"Then he told me, “Son of Man, fill your stomach and digest this scroll that I’m giving you.” So I ate it, and it was like sweet honey in my mouth". Eze 3:3 ISV

Marvelously Made!

Day 10:  There is nothing more awe-inspiring than holding a baby.  All babies are wonderfully made.  Such tiny little noses and toeses!

This is my quick doodle of my friend Sheri's twins.  Aren't they sweet? Just holding these precious children, my heart just abounds for love and admiration of the God who made them.  Children are such a gift!  Even as they get older, more opinionated, and much more snarky, they are wonderful, unique creations, knit together in a marvelous way.

Please, God, bless!

" Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother’s womb. I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking! Body and soul, I am marvelously made! I worship in adoration—what a creation! You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something. Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth; all the stages of my life were spread out before you, The days of my life all prepared before I’d even lived one day." YES! I Celebrate Halloween!

Day 9:  So, I'm kind of cheating today.  This quickie doodle is new, but the post is my annual soap box on Halloween.  Its long, but, hey, its my soap box speech!  Enjoy!

******************
Fall is my favorite time of year. As a redhead, I'm supposed to dress like mulch, so the colors of Fall suit me well. I love the crisp air, the smell of apples, football, and of course, Halloween. What, you ask?!?! Halloween? Its an evil demonic holiday, I'm told; its celebrating things of Satan; its dangerous; its pagan; and on, and on, and on...... Oh, but if we all dress as Bible Characters and throw a party at church it makes it okay? PUH-LEASE! Quite frankly, I think Christian's have really missed the boat when it comes to this holiday. Huh? Before anyone gets overly insulted, let me explain.

The origins of Halloween truly are pagan. The Celts believed at this time of year the dead returned to visit their homes. They would light fires and sometimes wear masks or disguises so as to not be recognized by the travelling ghosts. The Roman invasion came and as a result added their own twist, celebrating Feralia, the festival of the dead, and Pomona the goddess of the harvest. As with every other pagan holiday, we Christians supplanted them with a "Christian" event to offset the temptation to succumb to the evil festivities. That is why Christmas is in December (The Roman festival of Saturnalia), and Easter is in the Spring (the fertility festival). These fall celebrations became All Hallows Day, or All Saints Day. The evening before became holy, thus All Hallows Eve. After the reformation, the holy day was not widely celebrated, and even banned among colonists. But when the European immigrants came, they brought their customs and traditions, and Halloween became a favorite holiday, particularly among children. Why? Because of the treats, of course (which, by the way, stems from the British poor going door to door begging for food).

So, why the history lesson? I think it is important to understand that Halloween (and most other major holidays), though pagan in origin, has morphed and changed as time has marched on. I believe that just as it has before, Halloween can be changed into a powerful holiday that Christian's can enjoy and celebrate for God's glory! I'm not talking about holing up in our churches, going to shopping malls, dressing up as Moses or Jonah, or turning up our noses and turning off our lights. If there is one thing that is unique about Halloween, it is the fact that it is the only holiday that your neighbors expect you to knock on their door. To me, this is HUGE!

We are called to GO into the world, not to COME inside and ignore the world. Jesus was always walking into the midst of the world, eating with sinners and tax collectors, going where the "holy" people thought he shouldn't. Why on earth wouldn't we take this opportunity to follow his example? Get our of your house! Meet your neighbors! Form a community and claim it in His Name!

But Chrissy, you say, the commercial focus on Halloween is ghosts, goblins, and witches! So? That doesn't mean I have to focus on that too--well, unless I'm casting them out in the name of Jesus! I choose to focus on the Lord! I decorate my home with the things God gave us--pumpkins, cats, colorful leaves, and things of that nature. It looks festive, yet not icky. I encourage my son to dress up--I love the fact that kids can use their imagination to be whatever they want to be! I don't allow horror costumes because aspiring or imagining you are a witch or zombie, I feel, is not pleasing to God. But I'm certain He delights and smiles at little ones roaring like dragons in awe of a creature God could have made; saving the world as superheros by the power God gave them; pretending to be a doctor or pilot with skills from the Lord; sashaying as the beautiful princesses God made them to be; or being brave knights, showing the courage God gave them in the face of danger.

Oh Brothers and Sisters, wouldn't it be just like God to use a holiday so focused on and abused by the enemy for HIS ULTIMATE GLORY? I LOVE when God does that! Lets not miss the opportunity we have in this holiday! Let's be a light to our neighborhoods! Form relationships so people will get to know you and ask you what makes you so different! Take advantage of the fact that your neighbors are waiting for that knock on the door! Take back this holiday for the King of Kings!

If you are up to this challenge, I have a few ideas outlined below to help you in this quest!

Focus on the Lord--Pray over this Halloween, your neighborhood, the children; relate your decorating and costumes to the great things of God. Talk to your kids about why you don't like the creepy things. Let them know that God gave us this holiday to use our imaginations and to meet/say hello to our neighbors.

Take advantage of the fact that your neighbors are expecting you--Take your kids trick-or-treating yourself! Don't stand at the street and watch your kids run to the door. Walk up there with them, greet your neighbors and introduce yourself if you don't know them. Chat for a minute before you leave, and always smile!

Give out good candy--As a child, I always went to the houses I knew that had the best candy! I wasn't interested in Bible tracts or Jesus pencils, and I'm sure most kids today agree with me. Let your life and kindness send the message...not a pamphlet.

Have a Halloween party--do a festival of games on your front lawn, like a bean bag toss, or the duck pond for little ones. Have prizes--and of course GOOD CANDY. We have a Hallow-Weenie Roast each year and roast hot dogs, have some beer (for adults), soda, and hot chocolate available.  The neighborhood (and not so neighborhood) kids are regulars and look forward to it every year.  The local teens come back over and over with different friends each time...one group of kids even went and brought back their parents!

Don't snub--if a parent allowed their little one to dress up as the devil, don't start chastising them or the child. Instead tell them what a beautiful little boy God gave them, and chat with them as you would with anyone else. You can pray over them as you're talking and later on! Remember, YOU MAY BE THE ONLY BIBLE SOME PEOPLE EVER READ! Let them see God's Love in you!

Plan an event in your neighborhood--Talk to your neighbors. Maybe you can work a block party. Send flyers out encouraging people to trick-or-treat. Have a secret prize at one of the houses. Whatever you do, do it in YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD! Hmmmm...moon bounces aren't too expensive to rent......

Have Fun! Halloween was always so much fun as kid. I have great memories of dressing up  (I STILL dress up as an adult!), surprising my neighbors with my costume, and of course, the reward of treats at the end.

So, won't you join me in this quest? Lets pass a tradition of joy and community, praise and glory on this holiday. Let's claim Halloween for God's Glory. He is able--we should be willing!

God bless you this day, and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Please, God, bless!

"Therefore, as you GO, disciple people in all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I’ve commanded you. And remember, I am with you each and every day until the end of the age.”  Matt 28:19-20  ISV
