2015!

Day 100:  I can't believe it!  I made 100 days of doodling!  And, on the last day of the year.  I had no idea what day was what when I started this.  I just decided to pick a day and start.  I admit I have been very blessed by this doodle challenge.  It forces me to do something I enjoy-up until this challenge my  hobbies went by the wayside until everything else was done.  Since there is always something needing to be done, I went for a couple of years without a single drawing. After doing this now for over 3 months, I realize that it is better to have a good balance between "have to's" and "want to's".  And, I have thoroughly enjoyed aligning my doodles to focus my worldview.

Being its the last day of the year, I would like to take a moment to reflect, thank the Lord and pray for the new year.

Lord, on this last day of the year, I thank You for the gift of Your Son, Yeshua, and the Salvation provided through him.  I thank You for my family, friends, neighbors and co-workers.  I thank You for our jobs and the ability to provide for our family.  I thank You for the freedom we have to worship You.  I thank You for our home and everything else You have blessed us with.

I pray for the New Year that You come soon. I pray for the peace of Israel.  I pray for my country, and godly wisdom for the authorities, and to thwart foolish counsel.
I pray for myself and family
-focus, not complacency;
-joy in the little things;
-perspective vice emotion;
-kindness, not sarcasm;
-a good attitude vice a bad one;
-a heart for You vice the things of the world;

May You be praised, worshiped, and glorified
Name above all Names,
Lord of all Lords,
my King,
my Saviour,
my God.
Amen.

Please, God, bless!

Playing Games

Day 99:  Played some games with the fam tonight, so I threw down a super quick doodle so I can get to bed-I want to get the most out of my last day of the year tomorrow!

I pray you all enjoy your last day of 2014 tomorrow!

Please, God, bless!

Smaug

Day 98:  We finally got to see the Hobbit today at the IMAX.  I loved it, but of course I love the books and the LoTR, so maybe I'm geeky like that.  I was left with a few outstanding questions, mostly about the "added" characters that weren't in the book.  What was Alfrid's purpose in the movie, and what was his final fate after greedily in a most self-serving manner cared only of his own welfare? And Tauriel, who was banished from her Elven clan-what happened to her after Kili died, and Thranduil tells her that her love for him was real?!?  *sigh*  I wish these characters had some follow through...

Aside from that, the characters from the actual book were solid. The opening storyline of the movie continues with Smaug, the dragon, who, after being angered by the invading dwarves attacks Laketown for aiding them in their quest. The destruction is massive! The pure evil of this beast and disregard for any life at all is chilling. And his presence on the IMAX screen, nothing short of shockingly impressive. I think Peter Jackson and his team managed to capture the essence of the awoken terror and managed the scene as Tolkien closely imagined it.

The Bible also talks about a dragon, an ancient beast, also bent on pure evil. I can only imagine the image of Smaug in this movie is a minute fraction of the horror of the real thing. Christians don't like to speak of dragons and things that sound too outrageous. However, every horror, terror, nightmare, sorrow, hatred, depravity and deception is consolidated ultimately in our enemy, Satan, the dragon. Make no mistake about that--he is a creature of unthinkable evil.

Movies like the hobbit are fun to watch, heroic tales of an extraordinary good that overcomes a hellacious evil. Praise God, that in the real story, the Dragon will be defeated, because our Lord already won the war.

Please, God, bless!

New Drawing Table

Day 97:  As we were moving things around for the Christmas tree, we had to move my drawing table downstairs.  As we did, the metal leg severed and broke off!  I was heartbroken, but what can you do?

Knowing my extreme disappointment, my sweetie got me a new drawing table for Christmas-and it is really nice!  How thoughtful!  I am truly blessed by God with a great hubby!

Fittingly, the first doodle  I did on my drawing table is a quick sketch of my honey!  Not exactly how I would have liked it to turn out, but given my haste (its already late!) it will have to do.  Thankfully, he has a good sense of humor!

I love you, Danny!

A Piece of Candy

Day 96: We have so much candy from the holidays, I'm tempted to put it out on the counter because I know the boys will devour it quickly. There is no battle of will, because, frankly, there is no desire to abstain. For me, however, it is--especially if its a Reeses!  Being a bit more conscientious than my boys about what I eat, it may seem that I am not thinking of the oh-so-tasty chocolate peanut butter delights as I go about my business. But that would be a false perception, because I am definitely, overtly and painfully cognizant of the confection--its just that I've battled with my will and won (for the moment).

The devotional I picked up this am, My Utmost for His Highest, discusses a similar type of scenario when it comes to our spiritual struggles.

The battle is lost or won in the secret places of the will before God, never first in the external world. The Spirit of God apprehends me and I am obliged to get alone with God and fight the battle out before Him. Until this is done, I lose every time. The battle may take one minute or a year, that will depend on me, not on God; but it must be wrestled out alone before God, and I must resolutely go through the hell of a renunciation before Him.

Chambers, O. (1986). My utmost for his highest: Selections for the year. Grand Rapids, MI: Oswald Chambers Publications; Marshall Pickering.

I have struggles every day far more difficult than passing on a piece of candy, especially when it comes to the things of God.  While I may seem polished on the outside, inside of me it may be a spiritual war.  Being honest with God about my struggles and battling them before Him is the only way I have been-and will continue to be-able to overcome them.

Special Breakfast

Day 95:  As we struggle to get back into some sense of normalcy from the holiday diversions, I took my boy out for a very late "special breakfast". When he was little and everyone was still sleeping late on the weekends, I would wake him up and suggest we sneak out of the house for a special breakfast. We've been doing them ever since, and the time is so precious to me. We'll chat and just hang out-no video games, computers-just me and the boy, and some pancakes.

Please, God, bless!

The Birth

Day 93:  At Christmas we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  He wasn't really born on Christmas day, however, we embrace this opportunity to reflect on God's great Love and Mercy, and the Salvation He provided for us.

Please, God, bless!

"About that time Caesar Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Empire. This was the first census when Quirinius was governor of Syria. Everyone had to travel to his own ancestral hometown to be accounted for. So Joseph went from the Galilean town of Nazareth up to Bethlehem in Judah, David’s town, for the census. As a descendant of David, he had to go there. He went with Mary, his fiancée, who was pregnant.While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth to a son, her firstborn. She wrapped him in a blanket and laid him in a manger, because there was no room in the hostel.

There were sheepherders camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God’s angel stood among them and God’s glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David’s town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you’re to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger.”

At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praises:

Glory to God in the heavenly heights,
Peace to all men and women on earth who please him.

As the angel choir withdrew into heaven, the sheepherders talked it over. “Let’s get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us.” They left, running, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. Seeing was believing. They told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child. All who heard the sheepherders were impressed.

Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself. The sheepherders returned and let loose, glorifying and praising God for everything they had heard and seen. It turned out exactly the way they’d been told!"  Luke 2:1-20 MSG

Kermit as Bob Cratchit

Day 92:  Every year on Christmas Eve I watch my all time fave version of the Christmas Carol--by the Muppets.  This year, we kind of tweaked our annual viewing by watching it Christmas Eve-Eve, since we will be celebrating a little differently tomorrow. As always, its still great, still a lot of fun. Michael Caine is a perfect Scrooge and the Muppets keep it lighthearted and comedic while still conveying the message.

Scrooge found his redemption once he realized love, not money, made life worth living.  A very important message for an over-commercialized Christmas, as we remember that Love came to earth as a baby to save us, and make our lives worth living.

Please, God, bless!

Lessons in the Mistletoe

Day 91:  I feel like I've spent the day catching up.  Sometimes vacation can be so exhausting!  As I was catching up on mail I glanced up to the foyer, and saw my faux-mistletoe my mind wandered again.  I wondered about the origins of mistletoe with Christmas, and about the God-message that could be found in yet another pagan Christmas symbol.  One common origin-story for mistletoe is associated with Norse mythology.

Frigga the goddess of love wanted to protect her son Baldr, god of the summer sun.  She asked every living creature to promise not to harm him.  But Loki, the god of fire, knew the mistletoe was missed.  He fashioned an arrow out of mistletoe, and gave it to the god of winter, Hoder, who was blind.  He shot it, and it struck Baldr and killed him.  Frigga, devestated, For 3 days, all earth elements tried to bring him back to life, finally being restored by Frigga.  Her tears are said to be the mistletoe berries. Frigga kissed anyone who passed under the berries out of joy for her sons restoral.

There are other stories, of course.  But I am always astounded at some of the Godly truths that underlie many myths.  I find it no coincidence that Baldr was dead for 3 days.  I also find it fascinating that a cursed "tree" becomes a symbol of hope and love.  And think about Holder, who was blind and could not see the deadly impact of his actions.  Baldr is associated with the god of the summer sun, or light.  Loki, with evil and fire.  Love raised Baldr back to life.

So, I urge any of you when you hear of pagan origins of many things familiar to us that you look for the God message.  Just like I advocate for the God opportunities in Halloween celebrations,  It makes sense that God, the Creator of all things, would be at the base of the stories across the secular cultures.

Only three more sleeps until Christmas.  Please, God, bless!

Airport Delays

Day 90:  So I did do my doodle yesterday, but we got in so late I didn't post until today.  Before we
left for the airport we saw that our flight was going to be delayed by ~2 hours.  I called, and the customer service girl said that was only an estimate, and that we should still arrive on time.  By the time we got to the airport our flight was now going to be ~5 hours delayed.  After 2 hours, I checked, and again, our boarding time changed again to only ~3 hours delayed.  They started boarding.  Then they stopped.  Turns out they overbooked the flight by 15 people.  So, they had to go and get names and seats of the folks that already boarded.  Then they start boarding 150 people--BY NAME.  We happened to be sitting on the floor, and we heard the guy give our seats away!  So, when we were finally called, I said with a smile, "I am guessing you will be reassigning our seats since I heard you give them away?"  So he did..he wrote seats on the back.  I wished him good luck and happy holidays and we boarded the plane.

Not 2 minutes after we sat down, some folks came in and said, "Excuse me, you are in our seats."  I told the steward, the gate agent wrote down the seats for us.  So, we got to stay.  It took 1.5 hours to get everyone to board the plane.  We think we are getting ready to go, and then the gate agent comes on to collect our boarding passes...it seems they were still showing an open seat, but there were not.  Then he comes back again.  After three more runs through the plane, and almost 2 hours later, we finally shut the door.  The rest of the flight was uneventful except for the fact that we didn't get home until about 1:30 am.

Its hard to be mad at the initial delay--they experienced a fiber cut by Verizon.  And, they did send us an email letting us know the cause of delay.  The gate agent had to deal with many angry people, but he wasn't the one who overbooked the plane.  However, there didn't seem to be a clear resolution or training on how to fix effectively.  There were a LOT of unhappy people-especially those who were left behind.  And I felt really badly for the airline attendants as folks on board tended to take it out on them. I tried to keep it real because being cranky just wouldn't help anything.  I will be contacting the airline to let them know my observations and concerns.  In the meantime, I hope I conveyed some grace in the situation as an example to my son.

Thank the Lord, we made it home safely, and I thank the airline for that.

Please, God, bless.

Surfs Up

Day 86:  I learned something today...surfing is hard!  My son did much better than me, making at least one good rise to shore. I'm fact all of the kids did really well.  Must be their ability to pop up on the boards quickly.  Not me.  I spent more time underwater than above it.  But, it was a lot of fun.

The Flamingo Kiss

Day 81:  I went to a yard sale today, and among the piles of old stuff I saw this Gustav von Klimt print standing out like a sore thumb among the old forgotten household items.  It struck me as kind of funny.  A bit later I was having a conversation about the famed FL flamingos, kitchy, yet a staple in many FL homes regardless of posh or class.  For me it conjures up the same kind of disparate image.  Same type of image.  So I combined the two into my goofy interpretation of "The Kiss".

Evergreens

A Hot Shower

Day 78:  I ended up working late trying to get things wrapped up before we leave for our holiday break.  I was a bit worn out.  My remedy?  A nice, hot shower.  There is something so comforting and soothing about a hot shower after a long, stressful day.

Doesn't it make sense, then, that as Jesus cleanses us from our sin that we should feel our burdens lifted, and be free in His extraordinary grace and mercy?  Just as the cares of our day washes down the drain, so too does our sin wash away, gone for good.  We needn't ponder it, or revisit the pangs of guilt and shame.  For a moment, we are clean.

Pine Cones

Day 77:  I was sitting in my back room contemplating what to doodle, and I glanced up and saw the pine cones on the mantle. I love pine cones. They look like little trees, which makes sense since they are essentially the impetus for baby trees.

A couple of interesting things I didn't know about pine cones.  They come in both male and female. The female cones are the ones we typically associate with pine cones. As the seeds form they grow a hard outer shell to protect the seeds.  After a few years when the time is right, the seeds spread out more, the seeds loosen and are taken and spread with the wind.

I find that God provides us with so many object lessons around us.  A mother is a tough adversary when it comes to protection of her children.  She protects her young and when they are old enough, she loosens the armor, and the children leave her protection and start a new family.

Please, God, bless!

Dancing Queen

Day 76:  I was blessed today to see a special young lady's dance performance. There is something wonderful when you see someone dancing with joyful abandon!  She put her heart into her dance and it showed.

Wouldn't it be awesome if we all danced with gladness instead of worrying about how we did, what we looked like, or any other hangup we acquire as we get older?  Maybe its not a dance, but a song, a speech, a drawing-anything that we refrain from due to our self conscious nature.

I pray she will keep on dancing, like a dancing queen, and that we as adults would care less about irrelevant perceptions and just dance!

Please God, bless!

I chose to modify this one year challenge (9/23/14-9/24/15) to create something each day that would also force me to focus my perspective on a Godly world-view.

Like a puzzle!

Day 75: After the cookie party, four of us sat around and worked on the puzzle that was no where near finished.  Between us, we got the whole thing done in a couple of hours, and it really was fun (thus my 2 min doodle of a weird puzzle piece). When its all done, these weird pieces that made no sense on their own, together made an adorable winter picture. Imagine what the Body of Christ could do if the joined together like pieces of a puzzle!

Please, God, bless!

'Twas the Night Before Cookies....

Day 74:  'Twas the night before cookies, and all through the house....Everyone is sleeping...except for me, since I just finished cleaning and then did a quick doodle.  After this post, I'm off to bed!!!

I love our cookie party.  I love the prep for it, too, though tonight I am beat after decorating, cleaning, decorating, cleaning, shopping, etc.  It has its perks tho...my sweet hubby saved me some cookie dough for my favorite cookie.  Its the little things that make a girl swoon!

Please, God, bless!

Candy House

Day 73:  Part of our decorating includes a candy house my son and I do every year.  So, now that I am covered in icing and candy goo, I quickly doodled a candy house.

We all enjoy candy.  Imagine, that sweetness, that pleasure we feel when we have some chocolate is how God's Word is supposed to be to us!

Please, God, bless!

"How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" Ps 119:103

Seeing a Great Light

Day 72:  I was quizzing my son on his memory verse for school, and this is the doodle I came up with.

Please, God, bless!

"The people who walked in darkness
    have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
    on them has light shone." Isaiah 9:2-3 ESV

Perfect Gifts

Day 71:  Still decorating for the party... My son said, "Mommy, we need presents under the living room tree for decoration."  So, I wrapped all of the presents for extended family and close friends.  I enjoyed it simply because as I wrap them, I think of them, and that makes me smile.

God is so good.  Every good gift we receive, every talent we have, every moment of wonderous awe is all wonderful blessing from our Father above.  So, even though it may not be wrapped in a box with a pretty bow, take a moment each day to say thank you for the good things in your life.

Please, God, bless!

"Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow." James 1:17 NASB

Law "Endorsement" Body Cams?

Day 70:  I saw an article today, and I couldn't resist the visual in my head.  It was talking about how the President is endorsing body cams and plans on $263M to procure them for law enforcement.

I'm not disagreeing with body cams, but wouldn't it be interesting if the cams were also used for law "endorsement", i.e. your elected officials?  So ready to cast the first stone, I wonder what the headlines would read for their body cam SLAM?

  • Pols Pool Party with Lobbyist Babes
  • Sen Skipped Reading Bill for Night of Netflix
  • Dem Draws Mustache on Obama Pic
  • Republican Noshes on Pot Brownie
  • Feetie Pajamas All the Rage in Congress
  • Heavy Debate Not About Budget, But About Pie?!?
What headline do you think you'd see?

With or without body cams, God always knows what is going on.

"Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account." Heb 4:13 NIV
